Lime and timber specialist for period properties. For any period property with solid stone and adobe walls, lime restoration is the way to go as a solution to any prevalent damp issues and keep the integrity of the building. A stone and adobe wall is a wall constructed with stone and a mortar of earth and lime. A such the walls will move incrementally with the passage of time. Unfortunately many period properties in Cornwall have been rendered with cement. As the walls flex the cement, a non flexible and largely impermeable material, cracks allowing water ingress into the wall and trapping it and eventually lead to failure of the plaster or decor on the inside.

The structures of these periods would also have no damp proofing above the foundations, except in some cases a bottom course of slate. This often results in rising damp as once again the moisture is trapped in the wall exacerbated by lack of ventilation with double glazing, insulation requirements and draught excluders. Combined this also promotes timber rot in your property compromising the structural integrity of the dwelling.

The solution is often the removal of cement based products, allowing the dwelling to dry and then re-pointing or rendering or plastering with lime which unlike cement, is permeable promoting the passage of moisture, allowing the structure to breath and curing many damp issues.
